Design Collaboration and Coordination Made Seamless with Autodesk BIM Collaborate Pro

by | Oct 20, 2022 | AEC, Autodesk, BIM, Collaboration

Successfully delivering a project requires a massive team of contributors to work together — but today, effective collaboration has become more difficult than ever. Projects have only grown in complexity, putting higher demands on teams as they collect, share, and process massive amounts of data. Because of this, there’s a widespread need for connected workflows that facilitate better collaboration and coordination earlier in the construction process.

Many firms still struggle to create streamlined model coordination and design collaboration workflows.

Common issues include:

  • Inconsistent design data exchange leads to multiple sources of truth
  • Clash detection and issue management rely on a single power user, creating bottlenecks
  • A disconnected workflow spread across multiple solutions creates information silos
  • Poor digital collaboration makes teams highly dependent on in-person meetings and emails

These issues – all centered around collaboration – can easily lead to negative business outcomes like increased schedule risk, rework, and cost overruns.

Introducing Autodesk BIM Collaborate

At Autodesk, we’ve recognized a clear need in the AEC industry to improve the coordination and design collaboration processes. That’s why we’re excited to announce a brand-new product offering: Autodesk® BIM Collaborate.

Autodesk BIM Collaborate empowers project teams to align and execute on design intent and constructability by managing the entire design collaboration and coordination process. This includes model review and markups, issue management, change analysis, and clash detection – all within a single, cloud-based solution in a common data environment. The improved workflow reduces rework, improves productivity, and accelerates project delivery.

Workflows only work if they flow

BIM Collaborate Pro empowers teams with the coordination tools they need to avoid misalignment, catch errors earlier, and save money. Data is captured across project lifecycles and displayed in powerful dashboards that shine a light on project issues, transparency, and the completion status of major milestone.

  • Keep projects on schedule with real-time design collaboration
  • Understand edits and context using intuitive change analysis
  • Assess constructability with automated clash analysis
  • Consolidate issues management to reduce rework and change orders
  • Control project document access with multi-level permissions and data exchange management
  • Realize better outcomes through advanced project analytics

Benefits of Autodesk BIM Collaborate

Autodesk BIM Collaborate includes solutions for design collaboration and coordination workflows to ensure high quality designs make it to the site.

Design Collaboration

Design Collaboration is Autodesk’s design collaboration and data management solution for the AEC project lifecycle. It enables teamswhether within one company or across multiple companies, to collaborate securely and in real-time on Revit and IFC files. As a leading solution for AEC collaboration, Design Collaboration helps teams centralize project data, connect their workspaces, and collaborate in smarter, more extensible ways on increasingly complex projects. As a result, AEC teams can reduce distractions and rework, maintain fidelity of design intent through construction, increase team productivity, and accelerate project delivery.

Paul Nunn, National BIM Manager at Hansen Yuncken said, “As a general contractor, access to Design Collaboration provides us transparency into the model versions being used. The ability to easily identify changes between versions also ensures our trade teams are working off the latest models. This builds trust within the project team, and ultimately, speeds up the coordination process and gets higher quality designs to site sooner, reducing rework and improving project delivery.”

With Design Collaboration, project teams can:

  • Manage the exchange of design data. Gain an overall picture of a project, tracking design progress in a shared timeline with the ability to aggregate and view different design scenarios. Also, exchange design data in curated packages with strict controls, easily managing how the project team consumes design data.
  • Visualize design changes. Easily visualize and contextualize design changes by team, project phase, or building level. Explore shared design data before accepting the data in order to understand how new design information will impact work-in-progress.
  • Supercharge collaboration. Remove the friction of managing model updates and tracking changes manually to empower designers to focus on what matters: collaboration, creativity, and producing high quality designs.

     Model Coordination

Autodesk BIM Collaborate Pro is one bundle of tools on the Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) platform, a bundle of cloud services around collaboration, cloud hosting of models, cloud coordination, and project management tools. What was called BIM 360 before 2020, with products in their own information silos, is now ACC, where transferring data among tools is becoming seamless. Autodesk BIM Collaborate Pro is one of those products.

When it comes to using BIM Collaborate Pro (formerly BIM 360 Design), the key concept is collaboration. BIM Collaborate Pro empowers teams with coordination tools to avoid misalignment, catch errors early and save the company money. In addition, data can be captured across project lifecycles and displayed in dashboards that track resolution of project issues and highlight completion status of milestones.

    Using BIM Collaborate Pro:

    • Keeps projects on schedule with real-time design collaboration, including extended project teams and cross-discipline model coordination.
    • Provides document management for effective communication and coordination, helping users understand edits and context using intuitive change analysis and advanced project analytics.

The objective of BIM Collaborate Pro workflows is collaboration, and it helps users achieve that with three services:

    1. Design Collaboration with Cloud Collaboration for Revit and Desktop Connector, which facilitates collaboration with AutoCAD, Civil 3D and Plant 3D.
    2. Document Management with Autodesk Docs.
    3. Model Coordination with Insight.

For designers working in BIM Collaborate Pro, Design Collaboration (specifically Revit Cloud Collaboration) is where they spend most of their time when working on an ACC project.

BIM Collaborate Pro Revit Cloud Collaboration

    Cloud Collaboration

Day to day, most interactions are usually centered around the ability to work on a cloud-hosted Revit-workshared project – Revit cloud collaboration.

The Desktop Connector is utilized by AutoCAD, Civil 3D and Plant 3D users that need to host DWG files and Civil 3D data links in the cloud and work on them without having to download and upload them. It’s also useful for uploading Revit projects from design team members that are not using ACC when models need to be linked into a cloud-hosted Revit model. Desktop Connector creates a virtual drive on your computer that you can navigate to like any other drive or folder.

    BIM Collaborate Pro Controlled Sharing

    Sharing Data

In addition to Revit cloud hosting, the Design Collaboration module has an efficient, effective method of workflow for controlling the sharing and consumption of design team data – for the inhouse teams and outside consultants and stakeholders. Each team’s data is secure. Teams don’t have access to each other’s information unless it is published and shared.

Regarding sharing of data, the Design Collaboration module indicates each team’s progress on a chart in a form that appears as “swim lanes” (shown above). Color coding makes it easy to see teams’ progressive interactions with data.

All the services included with BIM Collaborate Pro – Design Collaboration, Document Management and Model Coordination with Insight – work with seamless transfer of data among themselves and the various workspaces. Users simply navigate to the service that best fits what they’re trying to accomplish. You won’t need to move your data; it’s going to be there for you.
